Work accidents
On this site we have gathered information concerning work accidents and safety. The work of NRCWE within the area of work accidents aims at developing, implementing and evaluating interventions and means directed at improving the safety of the company. The research includes, among other things, organisational and socio-cultural conditions in small and large companies and their surroundings which are of importance to the companies’ safety work. Furthermore, NRCWE conducts research within proactive safety work where prevention and safety becomes part of the company culture. The research is focused within areas where there is a high risk of work accidents and it is conducted in cooperation with national and international research institutions, working environment councils and practicians with knowledge of specific trades. The work accident area is part of the Government’s 2010 work environment programme.

Musculoskeletal disorders
On this site we have gathered information about musculoskeletal disorders. Work related pain in muscles and joints is a strategic research area at the NRCWE. The background for the research is international consensus of opinion that pain in muscles and skeleton is caused by many various factors (multifactorial). Factors which affect a person’s off-duty hours as well as working hours are of importance to prevention and rehabilitation in a work situation. Specifically, the NRCWE conducts research in how pain in and symptoms from muscles, tendons and joints affect absence from work and early retirement from the labour market due to physical attrition. Furthermore, the NRCWE works on developing tools which companies and consultants can use to register and affect work environment effects but to develop and test practical solutions. The musculoskeletal area is part of the Government’s 2010 work environment programme.

Sickness absence
On this site we have gathered information concerning absence. Prevention of absence is a recurring strategic research area for NRCWE which is an integrated part of most research projects. Primarily, the research is directed at the mechanisms behind absence and labour market exclusion as well as prevention of that. It also includes development of methods to evaluate the financial gains of prevention.

Chemical working environment
On this site we have gathered information concerning the chemical work environment. The NRCWE has research results om chemical work environment, toxicology, cancer, sensitivity differences towards carcinogenic exposure, cardiovascular diseases, health effects of air pollution, characterization of air pollution particles and reproduction damage.

New technologies
On this site we have gathered information about new technologies. The NRCWE has prioritized nano-particles as a strategic area within the work environment research. It focuses on nano-particles and their potential ability to develop severe and/or frequently occurring diseases. The NRCWE has a unique collection of methods to study the toxic effects of nano-particles which, most likely, will be of great importance to the future development of Danish companies. The research will integrate the areas of nano-particles, aerosol science and molecular biology. Microbiological research qualifications are maintained with a view to potential work environment consequences of the new, “green” technologies.

Organization and management
On this site we have gathered information concerning organization and management. An important strategic research area at the NRCWE is to support the companies’ efforts to improve the work environment. Therefore, the NRCWE develops methods which managements, employees and safety organizations can use in their work for a better work environment. Furthermore, the NRCWE studies how the human resources in the companies are best developed through motivation, involvement, qualifications and social networks. The NRCWE also studies new types of organization of the work, especially long working hours, work without boundaries and night work.

Surveillance
On this site we have gathered information concerning surveillance. The NRCWE will strengthen the strategic use of data from the work environment surveillance. It will be done by optimizing the research quality in order to systematically identify, quantify and to put into perspective potential work environment problems. The surveillance database constitutes a unique basis for NRCWE's research within epidemiology and for advancing hypotheses within NRCWE's strategic research area. Therefore, knowledge gained from the surveillance programme will be published immediately and form the basis for new research projects. The NRCWE will ensure that this is done in close cooperation with the labour market parties. Furthermore, the NRCWE will maintain its research-based knowledge to ensure that the Ministry of Labour and the work environment system can obtain information when necessary. This means that the NRCWE is able to provide minutes og knowledge of high quality on delimited problems with short notice. The minutes are either written directly by researchers from NRCWE or external researcher appointed by the NRCWE. Therefore, the NRCWE gives high priority to maintaining professional networks. The NRCWE surveillance is especially based on: • The Danish Work Environment Cohort Study which is a representative sample of Danes being asked about work environment and health conditions • The Occupational Hospitalization Register which contains information from hospitals showing differences in morbidity

Psychological working environment
On this site we have gathered information concerning social work environment. Stress, mobbing, and violence is one of the NRCWE’s strategic work environment areas. The research deals with areas such as stress, mobbing and violence which e.g. include mental health problems, decreased well-being, depression and mental attrition – consequences which can lead to sickness absence and premature retirement from the labour market. An important goal is to operationalise the elements of the concept “psychosocial work environment” and the interaction between working conditions, lifestyle and family life. The NRCWE will continue developing practical tools to be used by companies and consultants, but also to develop and test practical company-based solutions. Noise
On this site we have gathered information concerning noise. Noise is one of the NRCWE’s strategic research areas. The research includes noise and hearing and especially the negative effects on well-being and productivity caused by noise below the level which causes hearing impairments. The researchers will map noise and problems in the work environment, but also uncover which effects work environment factors as well as individual factors must have for noise to be perceived as uncomfortable. Furthermore, we also study the association between noise, stress, lack of well-being, reduced productivity and sickness absence as well as the possibility for making interventions in especially exposed environments. The noise area is part of the Government’s 2010 work environment programme.
