CERVA- how does certified work environment management systems work?

The CERVA project aims to improve our understanding related to the effective organization and use of certification of work environment. The overall intention is to enable Danish companies to make positive use of the Work Environment Management System.

In order to achieve these objectives, the CERVA project intends to answer the following questions:

How can firms carry out an effective implementation and successfully run certificated work environment management systems?

How are work environment and work environment performance impacted by the OHS?

How do OHS and the overall managerial system interact and how can this influence work environment and its performance?

Evaluation of the precautionary level

JobLiv Danmark, a partner in the CERVA project, will evaluate the work environment of 15 firms, with special focus on the level of prevention in relation to important work environment hazards. These 15 firms are divided in to groups for a comparative purpose: one group of 10 firms, which have achieved the best improvements in work environment after the certification, and the second groups of 5 firms with weak results.

Generating hypotheses

In the following phase, the researchers will develop case studies in each firm. The case studies will examine the implementation and running of the work environment management system in the overall context of the firm. The collection of data is based on several visits and interviews during a year, during which hypotheses about the function of the work environment management system are generated. These hypotheses are in following tested in the firm. The aspiration of the process is to clarify the importance of the firm strategies, organization and context have on the work environment system and the work environment improvements. When analyzing the firms, the theoretical framework includes grounded theory and triangulation.

Review of literature and analysis

Currently there is a rather impressive amount of international research into management systems and work environment management in particular. This research is studied and included in the literature review, which is carried out at the same time as the data collection above.

Cross-Analyses

In the analyses the goal is to develop categories of ideal firms, who can serve as representatives of different strategies and methods and thus as points of reference for the creation of well functioning systems of work environment management. The firms with positive results are also compared to the control group, in order to verify whether the significant variables were found in the analyses.

A statistical analysis is made of the overall effect of the certified work environment management, comparing the firms with and without certified work environment management.

International workshop

In order to receive a better feedback from the international scientific community, the results of our research will be presented in an international conference, where other researchers will have the possibility to comment on our strategies of analysis as well as on our results.
