Managing teams

The duration of the research project is three years and its purpose is to examine the relationship between team organisation, management and occupational health. It is assumed that effective management is important in creating effective teams, improving the working environment and well-being of employees, and finally, it is important in retaining employees working in teams.

The project focuses on two aspects: Education and training of team managers in order to develop their skills at improving the functioning of teams; and team managers’ development and implementation of interventions to improve the working environment in teams.

Teams are observed in order to:

  • Leadership style, especially transformational leadership. Increased focus on transformational leadership is assumed to improve self-confidence and relations between managers and employees.
  • Team functioning, i.e. clear goals, improved co-ordination, increased decision making responsibility, solidarity, innovation, productivity, and the team’s self-confidence.
  • Working environment with respect to increased involvement, social support, meaningful and challenging work, role clarity and fewer role conflicts.
  • Well-being of managers and employees, and the reduction of sickness absence and improved ability to retain employees.
